Unlocking potential: HGV Apprenticeships

February 16th, 2024

Back in June 2021, Lewys joined the Edge team as a van driver with the desire to learn and to drive as a career.

Lewys slotted in to the team so quickly, learning his role as van driver and always going the extra mile for his delivery points. He proved himself to have a great work ethic, to be someone worth investing in and started on his HGV apprenticeship journey with Edge.

Although the road has not been without its ups and downs, with the apprenticeship not running as it should, we are delighted that he passed his Class 1 test in December 2023 and is now out on the road each day in his allocated Edge artic unit.

If you speak to Lewys, the pride he has in passing his Class 1 is tangible. And so it should be. Passing your test to drive a 26 tonne artic isn’t an easy pathway; it takes dedication, rigorous training, and hard work.  The team at Edge are all so proud of Lewys; for his determination and desire to learn, as well as being an absolute joy to have working with us.

We want to encourage more people to consider HGV driving as a career choice and help them on their path to being a professional driver. That’s why apprenticeships are so important. For Edge the benefits are clear – we gain committed team players who appreciate the opportunity, want to continually develop and hopefully stay with us for many years to come.

Lewys isn’t our only apprentice, and he won’t be our last. Charlie in the office is our accounts apprentice – currently completing her AAT level 3 through Coleg Cambria.  We currently have another Lewis currently driving our van, on the pathway to his Class 1 through Road to Logistics, and we’re already looking to recruit our next van driver.

Interested in joining our team as an HGV apprentice and having the same success as Lewys? Send your CV to People@edgetransport.co.uk, and we’ll explore the possibilities.
