Our History

A proud third generation family business

The history of Edge; a little bit of our family history!

It is quite difficult to make the history of a transport company sound interesting so we thought we’d ask Chat GPT to summarise our history. This was the first paragraph it gave us…..

“The origins of Edge Transport can be traced back to ancient trade routes such as the Silk Road, which facilitated the exchange of goods between Asia, Europe, and Africa. These routes served as vital arteries of commerce, connecting distant regions and cultures through overland and maritime trade.”

So, on that basis, we’ve decided to go back to writing our own content!

Edge Transport was founded in 1933 and we celebrated our 90 year history in 2023.  Alfred Edge started as an owner driver distributing goods for the Army during the war and afterwards started to provide long distance haulage to Chester businesses. In the early 1960’s Alfred’s son, Peter Edge, got involved with the business. Alfred had shingles and couldn’t drive so Peter jumped in to cover for 2 weeks and never left!

The business was based in Hoole Lane, Chester however when houses were built around the site it made it difficult for the company to renew their Operators Licence (an essential requirement to run a fleet of vehicles) so Peter took the decision to relocate to Llay Industrial Estate near Wrexham.

After Peter sadly passed away in February 1999, the business was then run by his son, Jonathan, daughter Jenny and son-in-law Mark. As time moved on Mark left to pursue other interests and Richard Pridding joined the business, later becoming Jenny’s husband.  In 2012 Jonathan’s wife, Nikki, joined the company.

In 2013, the site in Llay was starting to be outgrown so we started searching for a larger site. After months of searching we found a 6.2 acre site on Fourth Avenue, Deeside Industrial Estate which was perfect.

Over the next 18 months the site was transformed into a purpose built 75,000 sq ft storage and distribution facility that Edge are immensely proud of.  Our new site was officially opened by the Rt Hon Lord Barry Jones on 14th September 2015, 4 months after we moved in.

Over the years, we’re proud that our achievements have been recognised outside of the business. Edge have been awarded Palletline Depot of the Year seven times, which is more than any other Palletline member during it’s 25 year history. We were also the first ever member to scoop both ‘top’ Palletline awards, Depot of the year and Delivery Depot of the year.  We’ve also been shortlisted for a Daily Post Achievement Wales Award and a Family Business Award. We have also received two West Cheshire and North Wales Chamber of Commerce Awards.

From 2023 onwards, our 90th anniversary year, the business has been run by Jonathan and Nikki, along with a Senior Leadership team, who together are driving the business forward.

In March 2024 we welcomed our first electric truck – a Volvo FH Electric – to join our two electric company cars, demonstrating our commitment to sustainability. The electric artic unit will be used primarily for completing Palletline collection and deliveries.

We’re a business proud of our people and the difference they make to our company. You can find out more about the great people we have shaping our future by visiting Our Team page. If we’re a company you’d like to work for then check out any current vacancies on the Join the Team page.
