Learning at Work Week 13th to 19th May: Unlocking Potential

May 10th, 2024

Did you know there was a Learning at Work Week?

Edge have always embraced the concept of developing our people. It’s in our culture, our DNA, to always be learning and improving.

When we heard there was a week dedicated to learning at work we started to think about what we could do. Then someone commented that it’s learning at work year, every year at Edge, which got us reflecting on what we offer our people.

Sometimes its as simple as offering a role to a newly qualified HGV driver, training them as a professional driver, and giving them the helping hand up to Class 1 (artic driving).

Or, our Van driver apprenticeship scheme which has trained two excellent Class 1 professional drivers and has a third on his way to a HGV licence.

But then we thought about what else we do:

  • Our recently formed Management team are all completing IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) Managing Safely as well as ILM (Institute of Management) Level 2 Certificate in Leadership to support them in being competent, capable, safe and inspiring managers.
  • We also support our drivers with their annual Driver CPC refresher training, arranging one paid day of training every year with an external provider.
  • Our Senior Drivers have completed ‘Train the Trainer’ courses for Fuel Efficient Driving and also Banksman too.
  • Our e-learning training covers everything from manual handling, food product safety management, through to understanding the labelling requirements of specific Edge customers.
  • Our Senior Leadership team have all had 1-2-1 leadership coaching through Steve & Kate at Dice Business Game Changers in Chester.
  • When we think about it, it’s quite a comprehensive list for an employer with 70+ staff and one we should be proud of.

So this Learning at Work Week, we’re going to focus on the just-for-interest training that our team could access.

Did you know that the Open University offers 900+ free courses which do include business skills, but also life skills such as managing money, languages and mental health. The course list is definitely worth a look and we’ll be promoting it throughout Learning at Work Week 2024!
