Sending pallets larger than the standard footprint?

Anything over 1.2m x 1.5m is classed as oversize

Our standard pallet footprint is deliberately generous, at 1.2m x 1.5m, to allow for some small excesses on a single pallet.

If your pallet exceeds this footprint, then oversize pallets are calculated in multiples of 1.2m x 1.2m. The rules around oversize pallets can be confusing so here’s what you need to know.

Limitations on Oversize Pallets

  • They can’t be offloaded by a tail lift as the footprint size doesn’t allow the pallet to be manoeuvred on the back of the vehicle on to the tail lift equipment without safety implications or putting your product at risk of damages.
  • They’re not typically eligible for handball through the Palletline network without prior agreement as this would involve offloading from the side of the vehicle.
  • Weight limits still apply to the individual pallets as they have to be able to be handled by fork lifts safely.
  • The number of spaces declared needs to reflect the footprint taken up on the vehicle bed. Bear in mind this can be along the width of the vehicle as well as encroaching across the bed of the vehicle, preventing pallets being loaded the other side.

A two space pallet, still within the maximum depth of the pallet of 1.22m so doesn’t affect loading the other side of the vehicle.

 

A three space pallet, still within the maximum depth of the pallet of 1.22m so doesn’t affect loading the other side of the vehicle.

 

Spaces are calculated for all pallets within a consignment. If these pallets were sent on separate consignments they would class as 2 spaces each, but as they will be travelling together on one consignment, 3 spaces apply.

They are both still within the maximum depth of the pallet of 1.22m so don’t affect loading the other side of the vehicle.

 

Where a pallet is over 1.2m both ways, then it starts to prevent pallets being loaded on the other side of the vehicle bed.

This increases the number of pallet spaces that it takes up.
